The historical traditional and basic colors of the Abyssinian Cat are ruddy (tawny/usual), red (cinnamon/sorrel), blue and fawn. They are recognized by the registries of all cat associations worldwide.
The silver varieties of the basic four colors are recognized in many associations, but non-silver offspring out of silver lines should be kept within the silver gene pool and not be thrown back into the traditional gene pool.
Any other possible color varieties are experimental in nature, they are not recognized by many notable registries and they should NEVER appear in a pedigree of any traditional Abyssinian Cat breeding program no matter what generation!
The chart below discusses only the four basic colors. You can find a similar chart for Silver breeding programs here. The letters below each color in the top and left row is the genotype received from both parents, one of each for the same letter. Big letters stand for dominance and only one letter is required for the color to be expressed. Small letters stand for recessive and it needs two (one from each parent) of the same letter for the color to be expressed. So, if you want to get recessive (red/blue) colors in your kittens, then either both small letters come from one parent or each parent contributes one, which means they were both carrier. The letter "c" stands for "carrying", so "ruddy c red" means "ruddy carrying red" for example. If you want to know the possible colors of kittens of a planned mating choose the color and the assumed genotype of the male in the top row and do the same for the female in the left row. The field where they both meet will show you the possible colors and its percentage represented. Please note, that the proportions of the various color combinations as listed below are theoretical, with the exceptions of those where 100% of the get are expected to be of one type. In relatively small litters (2-3 kittens) the probabilities of the predicted ratios actually being observed would be very remote indeed, in fact you can have a litter of all being one color only even if the prediction would be a selection of all four. If you repeat the same breeding several times and counting all resulting kittens, you may however get very close to the statistical probability listed below.If you do not know what recessive colors your cat is carrying, then you may find out by
sending a DNA sample to Veterinary Genetics Laboratory of UC Davis (USA). The current coat color panel does cover everything possible in a traditional Aby breeding program like cinnamon and dilute as well as agouti.
